Pre-'63 GT at Dijon

After the intense heat of Monza, the second round of the Pre-‘63 GT series produced another thrilling race at the Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or at Dijon. Competitors faced a wet qualifying session, but on a drying track Carlo Vögele made it two out of two to put his Ferrari GTO on pole from the father and daughter team of Urs and Arlette Muller in their DB4GT. In fact family teams seem to be a bit of a theme in the three-race series this year, with father and son Gabriel and Dion Kremer third in their Morgan whilst Lukas Hüni and Gary Pearson, in the beautiful Ferrari SWB completed the second row. Michael Gans and Jason Wright had the ex-John Whitmore Elite in the groove to take fifth on the grid ahead of a Morgan posse headed by the John Emberson/Bill Wykeham car.

Sunday’s race was dry despite a short shower before the start, and as the flag dropped, Vögele powered into the lead hotly pursued by the Kremer Morgan. So keen was Vögele’s start that a stop and go penalty for a jump-start dropped him down the field. No matter, a safety car incident to clear a stranded car bunched the field up, and at the restart the GTO once again pounced into the lead. Many teams took the opportunity to change drivers and the Hüni SWB, now driven by Gary Pearson was on a charge and swiftly asserted itself into second place. Pearson was not going to be content there and demonstrated why the SWB was one of the most successful GT racers as he squeezed every ounce of grip and power out of the car in pursuit of the GTO.

Further down the field, the ex-Dick Jacobs MGA twin cam team of Mark Daniell and Matthew Moore made the most of their first trip to Dijon to take third place in class B behind the AC Ace of Paul Conway and Ed Mercer.

It is now all eyes for a cracking race at the Silverstone Classic, where the victor will be presented with the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy for Historic Cars. Can Vögele make it a hat trick? “Monza and Dijon are both home circuits for the Swiss”, said Vögele, “We’ll wait and see what happens at Silverstone”.
