When the leading Ferrari 250 GT of John Hugenholtz and David Hart conked out on the final lap of the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy race for Pre-1963 Grand Touring Cars, Richard Attwood (Aston Martin DB4GT) howled past the stricken Drogo-bodied car to secure a fairytale victory for his co-driver Stuart Graham.
Graham did lead for the first four laps in a tense early-race dice, before Hugenholtz swept majestically past, leaving the Aston ahead of 2010 race victor Carlo Vögele’s rare Ferrari 330 GTO. Vögele and co-driver Willie Green were promoted to second by the long-time leader’s unexpected retirement, and up to third came the svelte Aston Martin DP212, started by German owner Wolfgang Friedrichs and finished by David Clark.
A third Aston, the DB4GT of Nick Naismith/John Young, finished fourth in a strong showing for the marque, ahead of Peter Neumark/David Franklin (Ferrari 250 SWB) and son and father Dion and Gabriel Kremer (Morgan +4). The tiddler class fell to the Lotus Elite of Roger Wills/Joe Twyman.
A thrilled Graham was delighted to add the TT for Historic Cars to his collection. Aptly, he was driving the ex-Equipe Endeavour DB4 GT Light weight driven in period by seven times TT winner Stirling Moss.
