More Than 150 Thousand People at Vila Real
Over 150,000 people were present in Vila Real (Portugal), on June 19-20, to attend the 43rd edition of the Vila Real Car Race, an event that has its roots as far back as 1931.
Over two days of mostly modern Portuguese Championship races (as well as a round of the Ford Transit Trophy!), were races for the Portuguese Classic Car Championship (1.300cc), both races won by Rui Azevedo in a 1300 GT Escort, and Portuguese Classic Car Championship for bigger-engine cars, with Joaquin Jorge (Ford Escort RS) and Luis Barros (Ford Escort MK1) taking a win a piece.
The event also had two demonstrations of cars organised by Porsche Club and Lotus Club.

Donington Revived
Masters Racing has worked hard over past months to help Donington, and since they announced the date for the track’s re-opening, there has been much interest from drivers and the public alike
They are planning a prestigious meeting for the re-opening the famous track after all its recent troubles and are inviting entries for their grids, as well as for two special 25-minute 1977 Celebration Races. This will be a special grid to commemorate Donington’s original Opening Meeting in the summer 1977 for 1970s GT and Touring cars of a ‘club racing type’ to join in with the Masters’ regular ‘Stars of the 70s’ grid. Anything in the spirit of the 1970s will be happily considered.
As well as the racing, there will be displays, driver’s parties and on track demonstrations. Entry forms are on the Masters website www.themastersseries.com.
Grand Prix Historique de Nogaro
How are your stocks of Armagnac, Confit of duck and Foie Gras? If they’re at zero, the Grand Prix Historique de Nogaro on September 4-5 is a good time to replenish your supplies before the end of year festivities.
The Grand Prix Historique de Nogaro will celebrate the circuit’s 50th anniversary with a full three-day meeting for historic cars including Historic Formula One and Formula 2, as well as most of the French Championships including the Challenge ASAVÉ for GT, TC and GTS cars up to 1976, Trophées F3 and Formule Renault Classic, the Challenge Formula Ford Historic and the Trophée Formule Ford Kent and Maxi Mille. Formula Junior is also invited to the party - it was in October 1960 that a chequered flag first fell at the circuit Paul Armagnac de Nogaro, at the close of a Formula Junior race.
A gala foie gras party is scheduled on Saturday night! Contact series organiser for entries.
Challenge ASAVÉ at Dijon
The French Championship Challenge ASAVÉ for GT, TC and GTS cars up to 1976 has been invited to run three 30-minute races at the Grand Prix de Bourgogne on October 2-3. For further details contact Alain Goupy:Alainagoupy(at)aol.com.
10,000 Tours
After such a successful Le Mans Classic event, the indefatigable team at Peter Auto is preparing for their trip to Silverstone on 9-11 September with CER. The CER race is in support of the modern Le Mans series, also run by Peter Auto. Next big thing for them will be their own all-historic race meeting at Paul Ricard on 8-10 October. On the programme will be, naturally, a round of the CER championship, as well as a packed grid of F3 Classic cars. This series goes from strength to strength. Group C will also put in an appearance on this track so well suited to their cars.
In addition Patrick Peter has come up with two special grids for which he is taking entries directly. The first of these is the Trofeo Nastro Rosso. In a variation on what seems to be a popular theme, this is for Italian GT and Sports cars, but the homogeneity of the grid is guaranteed, as only pre-1966 cars are eligible. Peter is expecting plenty of Alfa, Ferrari and Abarth Berlinettas and is hoping to attract a large selection of the more exotic sports racing cars, such as 340 and 375 MM, 375 Plus, 750 Monza, 121 LM, 625 LM, 500 TR, 290 MM. He is also encouraging some Stanguellinis, Morettis and other Italian rarities.
In collaboration with the creator of the Gentleman Drivers Series, Carol Spagg, Peter will also run a pre-’66 GT-pre-’63 sports car 2-hour endurance race. “We would like this race to be different”, said Carol Spagg. “We are trying to build it from the smallest class upwards, instead of the other way around. So, first we will make a class of 7 or 8 small capacity cars, then the next class up until we get to the E-types and Cobras. This is in the hopes that we have seven or eight cars in each class and everyone has a good race with cars of similar performance. We have had a really positive response to this and already have several Elites, SZs, Aces and other smaller or earlier cars signed up.” It should make for some great racing.
